How Many Dimensions Exist?
Yes, it was an inevitable consequence of having a look at Fractals. I wonder how many dimensions actually exist?? We tend to view our world through the eyes of 4D – length, width, height and time, but some scientists suggest that there could be up to 11D in our universe and that some dimensions may have been “lost” during the formation of the universe itself (such as black holes). More on this shortly but, to keep things in perspective, imagine that you are a student sitting at the back of the classroom and your teacher holds up a whiteboard marker pen…something like this;
Now, from the back of the room this pen seems to only have two dimensions – length and width/height. However, the teacher can move the pen around and see that it also has depth – a third dimension. They can also look at the back of the pen (look back in time?) or look at the front of the pen (look forward in time?). In other words, they have a different space/time perspective than you have from the back of the room. From the back of the room it looks more 2-dimensional, like this!
This is a rather simple illustration which I will add to in the next post…
