Sine Method used to measure tallest tree

January23

tallest_treeScientists recently measured the tallest tree in New Zealand at just over 81 metres. How did they do this? Using lasers and the Sine method – that is, the Sine of the angle formed by the lasers gave the height/hypotenuse. Read more here. (Note: This image is not of the tallest tree but gives some idea of how tall trees grow in New Zealand). Follow up question – if a branch breaks off the top of the 81m high tree, how long will it take to free fall to the ground? (Hint: you might find it easier to use an online Physics calculator, such as this one. Check answer in Post Support).
