Google Math
Which is a good lead (a Google Lead?) into the following question –
How important is Mathematics in a Google Interview?
Sean Gerrish, a , replies,”You should at least be prepared with knowledge of discrete math. You should know what logarithms are, how to figure out the number of bits required to represent 1,000 unique values, and how to do basic algebra. Probably most good candidates at these companies have taken a course in linear algebra as well, but I doubt you’d get questions on this.
N.B. having some type of math on your resume — like differential equations or linear algebra or probability — opens that up as a potential area for questions. So if you took a class in one of these subjects and forgot everything in it, it could actually be a bit risky to put it onto your resume. But if you remember the material reasonably well, it is probably a good thing to put it on there.
Regarding how important math is on the job: anywhere from somewhat important to critical. While in some cases you can get by with a functional level of math, it’s best to know it well. I’d doubt that any of the best engineers (at Google) are bad at math.”
