Mac Mouse Magic for Mathematical Memories

May30

A few of us met the Macintosh when it was launched in 1984, and I can still remember a sample being on trial at my first school. Sitting apologetically in the corner of the main staffroom, it was a rather odd looking, all-in-one computer with a strange device attached called a “mouse”. Perhaps that is […]

Cool Graphing Software – for free!

March2

Here are two great (and FREE) graphing software packages. Every maths student should have access to one of these (depending on the OS they are using); 1. Microsoft Mathematics for Win 7. Download here. 2. Grapher for Mac – go to Applications–>Utilities–>Grapher; ¬† Both programs allow 2D and 3D graphing, etc. Enjoy! PS: for iPad […]

Yes, Lombard St follows a Sine Curve

February13

So, wise mathematician, let’s connect our view of Lombard St with a Sine Curve. We can do this using (on Mac computers, etc.) a free application called Grapher (go to applications–>utilities–>Grapher) or check out the apps for iPhone and iPad here, or use one of the free online graphing tools.¬†Anyway, when we combine the sine […]

NCEA Level 2 Algebra Problem. Using the information given, the shaded area = 9, that is:
y(y-8) = 9 –> y.y – 8y – 9 =0
–> (y-9)(y+1) = 0, therefore y = 9 (can’t have a distance of – 1 for the other solution for y)
Using the top and bottom of the rectangle,
x = (y-8)(y+2) = (9-8)(9+2) = 11
but, the left side = (x-4) = 11-4 = 7, but rhs = y+? = 9+?, which is greater than the value of the opp. side??
[I think that the left had side was a mistake and should have read (x+4)?]
