Which leads to Vectors

September25

The apparent wind direction for sailing boats can best be described by vectors. Notice how the resulting (apparent wind) direction (called “resultant”) is found by joining a line from the base of the first vector to the end of the second (source: oceansail): The lower pic is action from the America’s Cup boats from the […]

Vectors…adding to find final resultant for wind-shear, etc.

May11

The word “vector” comes from Latin and means “carrier”. Vectors have length (called magnitude) as well as direction (shown by an arrow on the vector line). Vectors are a great practical way to understand forces at work when (e.g.) aircraft fly with a cross-wind, or ships that a heading in one direction but are blown […]

One Direction but not a Pop Group!

While waiting for a flight recently I noticed a large arrow on the glass facing the tarmac. Perhaps it was there to show a contractor a repair that needed doing. Whatever the reason it indicated a direction and location; Mathematics often deals with arrows (vectors) and directions – for example, compass directions and absolute values. […]

10 x 9 x 8 + (7 + 6) x 5 x 4 x (3 + 2) x 1 = 2020

NCEA Level 2 Algebra Problem. Using the information given, the shaded area = 9, that is:
y(y-8) = 9 –> y.y – 8y – 9 =0
–> (y-9)(y+1) = 0, therefore y = 9 (can’t have a distance of – 1 for the other solution for y)
Using the top and bottom of the rectangle,
x = (y-8)(y+2) = (9-8)(9+2) = 11
but, the left side = (x-4) = 11-4 = 7, but rhs = y+? = 9+?, which is greater than the value of the opp. side??
[I think that the left had side was a mistake and should have read (x+4)?]
